What is “Mughaiyur?

Mugayur is a small fishermen's village located in the Northern Part of Tamil Nadu, along the East Coast Road (ECR). The village consists of 10 different Hamlets within itself namely,

• Kolavanji Colony
• Mugayur Thoppu
• Mugayur Grammam
• Mugayur Naduthittux
• Mugayur Pattarai
• Mugayur Pattarai Colony
• Perunthuravu Gramam
• Perunthuravu Colony
• Perunthuravu kuppam
• Mugayur Colony

All the people in these Hamlets of Mugayur predominantly belong to the Fishermen Community. People from other occupations also live in this community who are majorly daily wage workers.

These Hamlets are still underdeveloped with little to no proper road facilities, transportation facilities, Drinking Water facilities, Sanitation facilities etc. Even the existing facilities are in worse conditions and are completely unfit for human consumption and usage.

Our main objective of the Mugayur Nagarigam Project is to empower the people of the Mugayur Village by providing them with all the basic necessities such as Drinking water, Sanitation, Roads, Schools etc. thus improving their standard of living.

Mugayur Nagarigam Project

PHASE 1

As Phase 1 of the Mugayur Nanagarigam Project, Nourishment for Needy has decided to improve the standard of living of the Mugayur Colony hamlet in the Mugayur Village. The Mugayur Colony comprises two streets, namely,

• Sagothiriamman Kovil Street: 87 Houses
• Muthalamman Kovil Street: 35 Houses

We have 122 houses with 563 residents living in the Mugayur Colony Hamlet.

In discussion with the residents of the Mugayur Colony Hamlet, Nourishment for the Needy understood their plights and has come up with a community development project, developing,

• Renovation of Mugayur Public School
• Renovation of Mugayur Colony’s Samudhaya Koodam (Community Center)
• Sanitation Facilities (Construction of Toilets, Bathrooms, Drainage Facilities etc.)
• Drinking Water Facilities (Construction of Water Storage Tanks)
• Garbage Disposal Facilities (Garbage Disposal Bins)
• Road Facilities (Pavement of Concrete Roads, Provision of Street Lights)
• Transportation Facilities.

Mugayur Public School

The Mugayur Government School, teaches children of levels from Kindergarten (from LKG) to Middle School (to Std.8). Currently, 221 Students (125 boys + 96 Girls) from the Mugayur Village are receiving education from the Mugayur Government School.

But the Government school has been neglected for years and is currently in a state of disrepair, with inadequate facilities and broken infrastructure.

NFN volunteers, accompanied by a team of engineers, personally visited the school and recommended a plan of action for restoring it. The minimum approximate estimate for carrying out these activities is close to 20 lakhs. NFN urges supporters to help in this endeavour in any way they see fit, including providing finances, construction materials, apparatus, furniture, electronics, and so on.

Costing of

Mugayur Samudhaya Koodam

The Samudhaya Koodam (Community Center) is located at the center of the Mugayur Colony which is owned and maintained by the community. This community center is used to conduct cultural programs for festivals and community events. The space was also rented to celebrate special occasions of the Community members such as weddings, receptions, Naming Ceremony, Engagements etc. at a subsidised rate and all the income generated will be utilized for running and maintenance of the Community Center. Also, the Community Center also acts as a temporary shelter during times of natural calamities.

But due to natural disasters, lack of funds, and various other events the Community center is extremely damaged and unfit for use for the past couple of years. Since the Samudhaya Koodam offered a number of benefits to the community the people of the Mugayur Colony requested our team to renovate the space and bring back it to a functional state.

Our Volunteers and assessed the building and found that almost all the utilities like electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures, doors and windows should be repaired and replaced if necessary. After this inspection the engineers estimated a total of Rs.20 Lakhs for bringing the Samudhaya Koodam to its former glory.
